- Dakhla
Dakhla sits at the tip of a long, narrow peninsula that curls along the Atlantic coast, enclosing a sheltered lagoon of shallow turquoise water. Steady trade winds, flat water and year-round sun have made it one of the best-known kitesurfing destinations in the world, but it is also a working fishing town with a growing role in the region’s economy.
Why visit Dakhla
Most visitors come for the lagoon. Kite and windsurf camps line its western shore, and the water stays flat even when the wind is strong. Beyond the sport, the lagoon is good for boat trips, birdwatching and long walks at low tide. The town itself is relaxed, with a seafront promenade, cafés and some of the freshest seafood in Morocco: Dakhla’s oysters are farmed in the lagoon and served across the country.
Highlights nearby include Dragon Island, the White Dune and the warm spring at Asma, outside town. For a ready-made plan, see Dakhla in three days.
Getting there
Dakhla Airport (VIL) is in the town itself. Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca several times a day, and there are direct international flights from France, Spain and the Canary Islands, including on Transavia, Binter and Ryanair. Routes change by season, so check current schedules. By road, Dakhla is the end of the Tiznit–Dakhla expressway, more than 500 km south of Laâyoune.
Getting around
The town is compact, and petits taxis are cheap. Camps and hotels around the lagoon usually arrange transfers from the airport. For excursions, join a 4×4 tour or hire a car; the coast road around the lagoon is paved.
Where to stay
Choose between the town, which has hotels and guesthouses close to restaurants, and the lagoon shore, where kite camps and eco-lodges offer bungalows with direct access to the water. Lagoon camps are the better choice if you plan to kite every day; the town suits shorter stays and business trips.
When to go
Dakhla is mild all year, rarely very hot or cold. The wind is most reliable from spring to early autumn, which is peak season for kitesurfers. Winter brings lighter winds and calmer conditions for beginners, families and birdwatchers.
