  1. Home
  2. Things to do

From kitesurfing on a turquoise lagoon to a night under the desert sky, the southern provinces offer experiences you won’t find anywhere else in Morocco. Here are the highlights, region by region.

Water sports

  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing on the Dakhla lagoon, with flat water, steady wind and schools for every level.
  • Surfing on the Atlantic coast, especially around Sidi Ifni and on the reef breaks north and south of Dakhla.
  • Fishing from the shore or by boat. The coast is known for its sea fishing, and local guides know the spots.
  • Boat trips to Dragon Island and through the channels of the Khnifiss Lagoon.

Desert trips

  • 4×4 excursions to the White Dune, Plage Blanche and the empty beaches south of Dakhla.
  • Camel treks and nights in a camp, where the absence of light pollution makes for exceptional stargazing.
  • The road inland to [Smara](/city-guide/smara), across the stony plateau of the Saguia el-Hamra.

Always travel in the desert with an experienced local guide, and tell someone your plans.

Nature and wildlife

  • Birdwatching: the coast lies on the East Atlantic flyway. Khnifiss and the Dakhla lagoon attract flamingos and large numbers of migrating shorebirds, especially in spring and autumn.
  • Hot springs: soak in the warm water at Asma near Dakhla, or at Abaynou near Guelmim.
  • Oases: walk through the palm groves of Asrir and Tighmert near Guelmim.

Culture and history

  • The Amhayrich camel market in Guelmim, busiest on Saturday mornings.
  • [Casa Mar](/what-to-see/casa-mar) and the Saint-Exupéry museum in Tarfaya.
  • The zawiya of Ma al-Aynayn in Smara.
  • The Cape Bojador lighthouse in Boujdour.
  • Saharawi tea, the ritual that opens every visit. Read the art of Saharawi tea.

City life

  • Laâyoune: evening walks around the main squares, markets for melhfa cloth and silver jewellery, and cafés that stay busy late.
  • Dakhla: the seafront promenade, the fish market and the oyster farms. Try the oysters and grilled fish.
  • Festivals: the region hosts music, film and sport events through the year, including international kitesurfing competitions in Dakhla. Check local listings when you travel.
