The White Dune (Dune Blanche) is a tall, pale dune on the eastern shore of the Dakhla lagoon. Its sand is unusually light, almost white, and at low tide it rises straight out of the shallows, with desert on one side and turquoise water on the other.

Walk to the top for one of the best views of the lagoon, then walk, or roll, back down to the water. Low tide uncovers sandbanks and pools around the base of the dune.

Visiting

The White Dune is reached by 4×4 or boat, usually on a half-day excursion from Dakhla that can be combined with Dragon Island. Trips are planned around the tide; low tide is the classic time to visit.

  • Bring water, sun protection and something to cover your head: there is no shade.
  • Wear sandals or go barefoot; the sand gets hot by midday.
